Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a powerful tool in counseling and psychology training programs, particularly by extending traditional training methods with simulation-based applications that enable students to safely practice and strengthen essential clinical skills (Jeong et al., 2025). Current applications include generative AI programs that create realistic dialogues to simulate counseling sessions for practicing counseling skills through simulated role-plays, offering students opportunities for guided practice (Maurya, 2023a; Maurya, 2023b; Maurya & DeDiego, 2023). Additionally, the use of AI-generated post-session feedback can analyze counselor-client talk ratios, organize session themes for reflection, and produce initial drafts of case notes (Jeong et al., 2025; Maurya, 2023b), all of which have the potential to enhance conventional clinical training.
Researchers have identified several potential benefits of AI in clinical training, including enhanced counselor self-efficacy and skill development (Ellis et al., 2015; Maurya & DeDiego, 2023; Sanz et al., 2025), reduced negative affect (Sanz et al., 2025), and supplemental support for supervision (Maurya, 2023b). However, empirical support for AI in supervision remains limited (Maurya & DeDiego, 2023; Sheperis & Sadeh-Sharvit, 2023). Such training paradigms also encompass significant ethical questions, such as client confidentiality, bias in AI-driven systems, and the risk of diminishing critical thinking and diagnostic skills among trainees. Thus, challenges remain for ethically integrating AI into clinical training and supervision (Maurya & De DeDiego, 2023).
In this session, presenters will share examples of how AI is being integrated into clinical training programs and provide a live demonstration of AI-generated feedback. Discussion will highlight how such tools can complement established training models, while also addressing potential risks and ethical considerations. Ultimately, this session invites participants to critically examine both the promises and pitfalls of AI in clinical training programs, fostering a forward-looking dialogue on how to prepare the next generation of counselors and psychologists.
