Abstract text:
The United States faces significant challenges related to crises such as climate change and environmental degradation. Given the political climate and social inequalities that are unique to the United States context, it is important to better understand how young adults view these particular challenges and the impact it has on their career plans and their well-being. To explore these concerns, interviews were conducted with 10 U.S. university students, and Consensual Qualitative Research methods were used to analyze the interview data. Some themes that were identified included the participants identity as a climate activist and how that contributes to their sense of belonging, perspectives on causes and solutions to issues of climate change, future plans and perceptions of the future, the psychological impact of climate change and the coping strategies used to address negative effects. The results offer insights into how young adults in the U.S. experience and respond to the ecological crises and underscore the need for supportive career counseling interventions that empower collective action, alleviate, psychological distress, and integrate conversations about how the future of our ecological climate might influence an individual's career choices.
