Abstract text:
This presentation explores how Indian psychology, grounded in traditions such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness could offer transformative pathways for the global mental health. Drawing on evidence based empirical studies conducted in India, the session highlights interventions with working women coping with smoking behaviors, survivors of sex trafficking, cancer survivors, trauma-affected individuals, and young adults facing stress and emotional challenges. Findings underscore both the strengths and barriers of integrating traditional practices in community mental health, while pointing toward policy-level adaptations that can strengthen psychosocial support systems.
In addition to research outcomes, the talk will reflect on the establishment of Antardrishti, an Indian Psychology Lab, as a model for cultivating dialogue between traditional wisdom and contemporary psychiatric practice. Through workshops, training programs, and cross-cultural learning circles. The lab has facilitated engagement among students, researchers, practitioners, and international collaborators, generating locally rooted yet globally relevant healing practices.
By presenting evidence, lived experiences, and community success stories, the session will emphasize how bridging traditional knowledge with modern psychiatry can enrich therapeutic practices, empower marginalized groups, and foster more inclusive, culturally attuned models of mental health care in today's interconnected world.
