Abstract text:
Nature-health research has predominantly focused on (urban) green spaces. However, most urban settings are built on major water sources (rivers/lakes) or the coast meaning blue spaces are an important feature of many people's local environments. Further, in operationalising nature, researchers have spent most of their time looking down at what's below their feet, rather than looking up at what's above their heads. Nevertheless, the sun, the moon, the clouds, and even fleeting rainbows are all part of nature too. The aim of the current talk is to broaden the discussion of what counts as nature in nature-health research, and argue that greater attention should be paid to the role of elements beyond green spaces. The talk will present headline evidence from a 15-year programme of work looking at the contribution various types of blue spaces make to a range of health and well-being outcomes as well as more recent research showing that what's happening in the sky significantly affects psychological reactions to natural elements on the ground. Studying green spaces and health in isolation is only half the picture - it needs to be taken in the context of the larger water cycle as ultimately without rain from the sky and water on and under the ground there are no green spaces. This complex inter-dynamic and its impact on mental health has so far been largely neglected. The talk argues that we need a systematic programme of work that looks at nature in the whole to close this gap. Ultimately, the aim of such a research programme would be to highlight the importance of the interconnected dynamics of various aspects of "nature" for our health and well-being in an attempt to reduce the growing anthropogenic destabilizing of the natural world.
