Abstract text:
Introduction: Suicide remains a significant public health issue in India, with 171,000 reported cases in 2022—a 4.2% increase from 2021 and a 27% rise since 2018. The suicide rate reached 12.4 per 100,000 population, marking the highest on record. These statistics underscore the urgent need for effective, low-cost, and evidence-based interventions, as many suicides are preventable with timely support.
Purpose: This qualitative study aims to explore the factors contributing to suicidal behavior among college students, also to identify effective coping strategies and support systems.
Methodology: This qualitative study aimed to explore the multifaceted factors contributing to suicidal behavior and identify potential prevention strategies. In-depth, open-ended interviews were conducted with 170 college students aged 18-25 at Dr. Hari Singh Gour University. Participants were selected through purposive sampling.
Results: Thematic analysis revealed several key themes associated with suicidal behavior, including depression, economic stress, career and employment challenges, academic failure, loneliness, peer pressure, relationship conflicts and self-worth issues. Effective coping strategies identified by participants encompassed fostering open communication with family and friends, promoting mental well-being, mastering daily life management, nurturing a sense of social responsibility, and engaging in spiritual and mindful practices. Notably, participants emphasized the importance of affordable and accessible support systems, such as peer networks and mental health programs.
Conclusion: This study highlights the critical role of emotional and social support in preventing suicide. By encouraging open dialogue and providing access to mental health resources, communities can address the root causes of suicidal behavior and create a more resilient and supportive environment for those at risk.
