Introduction
Sustainability has become an important aspect in everyday lives. Its priority is being increasingly highlighted globally. The integration of sustainability in our daily lives is inevitable. Through decades, sustainability did not gain enough weightage to make it as the essential indicators of well-being, let alone measuring sustainable well-being. This paper highlights the need and importance of a holistic well-being questionnaire.
Purpose
Well-being questionnaire/s took into account various aspects like physical, mental, social, spiritual and emotional. However financial, environmental and sustainability of well-being were hardly considered as indicators in any questionnaire. A more inclusive questionnaire to determine well-being, its longevity and sustainability is crucial. Thus, a 'Sustainable well-being Questionnaire' has been developed and administered among Indian youth.
Method
An extensive sustainable well-being questionnaire is developed, with various aspects like Physical, Mental, Spiritual, Social, Environmental, Economic, and Sustainability. The questionnaire has 97 items in total. A Likert scale ranging from 1 (Strongly Disagree) to 5 (Strongly Agree) is used. The students' responses (N=500) were then quantitatively analyzed to find out the correlations among the sub-aspects. Thus, the importance of sustainability, environmental well-being and the reason behind its inclusion is highlighted.
Results
The Indian youth hailing from urban areas exhibited a higher economic well-being. Environmental well-being is significant in people hailing from semi-urban and rural areas. Sustainability stood among one of the top scored average items in the questionnaire. Males recorded high on economic well-being while females dominated in social well-being.
Conclusions
The results indicate that there is a need for an in-depth analysis of sustainable well-being. This basic research is the foundation of such an attempt to determine which aspect of well-being is high amongst Indian youth and which ones need improvement. Further frameworks on improving well-being of youth can be devised with extensive studies, focusing on necessary aspects.
