Internet based cognitive behaviour therapy (ICBT) is a form of therapist guided
delivery treatment that presents structured self help materials through the web. It is
acknowledged to work for a range of clinical conditions. The present study was
designed to assess the impact of ICBT on Emotional Competence (EC) and
Alienation among 100 depressed Indian adolescents aged 13-17 years, equally
divided into gender,Type A and Type B personalities and pre/post categories. A
2x2x2 factorial design was used by administering standardized tools. Depression
level was measured by using ADSS scale developed by Pallavi bhatnagar, (2011),
Type A/B personality scale of Upender Dhar and Manisha Jain (2002), EC scale of
Bhardwaj and Sharma (2007) and Alienation scale of Ojha (2010 was administered
individually to collect the data. All the subjects were contacted individually and
given 12 sessions of 40-45 minutes each. ICBT intervention was found to be
significantly affecting or lowering the depression level in both personality types.
Gender differences were also observed on the level of depression. EC level was
found to be unaffected in Type A subjects, whereas Alienation was significantly
affected in Type A personality subjects. ICBT proved to be an effective method for
reducing the level of depression and enhancing the emotional competence level of
the depressed adolescents. The therapy also contributed in reducing the level of
alienation among depressed subjects. The overall detailed findings shall be
discussed in the full paper highlighting the implications in wider perspective.
