Abstract text:
Objective: This study aimed to explore the effects of Miss Pama, a PERMA-based AI chatbot designed to reduce excessive smartphone use and promote daily well-being among university students. Grounded in Positive Psychology, the intervention integrated the five PERMA elements—Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment—into reflective dialogue to enhance self-awareness and behavioral regulation. Participants: Five university students (three females and two males; aged 19-24, M = 21.2) participated in the study. All met the diagnostic cutoff score (≥64) on the Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI), indicating clinically significant smartphone overuse. Method: The study adopted a phenomenological qualitative approach to capture participants' lived experiences and meaning-making processes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted after the intervention, and data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify essential themes of change. A six-week AI-guided intervention was implemented through text-based conversations with Miss Pama. Semi-structured interviews were conducted after the intervention, and data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify the effects. Findings: Findings showed that interactions with Miss Pama increased participants' self-awareness of smartphone habits, reduced impulsive usage, and enhanced attention to positive daily experiences. Participants reported greater emotional balance, engagement in meaningful offline activities, and a general sense of psychological flourishing. While Miss Pama provided a safe, supportive, and low-pressure environment, limitations were noted in emotional depth, memory continuity, and conversational authenticity. Conclusions: These findings suggest that a PERMA-based chatbot like Miss Pama can serve as an innovative and supportive digital intervention for reducing smartphone overuse and fostering everyday well-being among young adults.
