Committed and satisfying romantic relationships are associated with positive mental health
outcomes and well-being. However, previous research suggests that adults with Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and their partners face unique challenges within
romantic relationships, indicated by lower relationship satisfaction and higher divorce rates.
Yet, little research has focused on the lived experiences of adults with ADHD in romantic
relationships or considered what strengths or strategies they might employ to support their
relationships. Additionally, there is limited research exploring the potentially unique
dynamic of having a partner who also has ADHD. This qualitative study interviewed 11
adults with ADHD in romantic relationships. The study aimed to include participants with
ADHD partners, but did not exclude other neurotypes, to capture a range of experiences.
Interviews focused on the impact of ADHD within their relationship, focusing on: conflict
resolution; communication; strengths; challenges; and strategies. Thematic analysis
identifying key themes is in progress. This study contributes to the growing body of
neurodiversity affirming research and will provide clinicians with a strengths-informed
understanding of how ADHD may impact romantic relationships.
