Abstract
Introduction
In mental health services, implementing and evaluating interventions that enhance coping and self-esteem are essential, as these factors play a critical role in promoting individuals' recovery. A Turkish adaptation of the Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) outcomes "Coping" (1302) and "Self-Esteem" (1205) has not yet been identified in the literature.
Purpose
This study was conducted to examine the validity and reliability of the Turkish translations of the NOC outcomes "Coping" and "Self-Esteem".
Method
This methodological study was conducted with a sample of 145 individuals who visited a psychiatric outpatient clinic. The validity of the outcomes was assessed using content, convergent, and construct validity methods, while reliability was evaluated by calculating Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega reliability coefficients and intraclass correlation coefficients. The data for the study were collected between December 2023 and July 2024 using the Information Form, NOC outcomes "Coping", "Self-Esteem", Coping Strategies Brief Form, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Trait Anger and Anger Expression Styles Scale. The data were analysed using IBM SPSS 28.0 and Mplus 8.3 software.
Results
The NOC outcome "Coping" consists of 19 indicators and a single dimension, demonstrating excellent inter-rater reliability, good internal consistency, criterion validity, and discriminant validity. The NOC outcome "Self-Esteem" comprises 19 indicators and 3 sub-dimensions, demonstrating excellent inter-rater reliability, adequate internal consistency, criterion validity, and discriminant validity.
Conclusions
In conclusion, NOC outcomes "Coping" (1302) and "Self-Esteem" (1205) were determined to be valid and reliable instruments for use with individuals diagnosed with mental illness. The results of this study will enable the evaluation of mental health care through an international nursing classification system. Therefore, the study is expected to contribute to the body of nursing knowledge, the dissemination of an internationally standardized language, and the improvement of the quality of care.
