Abstract text:
Homelessness is often depicted as a personal choice and regarded as socially undesirable. In addition to the stigma and discrimination attached to homelessness, homeless parents are forced to bear the child-rearing responsibilities in a high-risk environment, thereby placing them at a greater risk for developing mental illness. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of homeless parents in relation to their mental health. A phenomenological approach was employed to understand how each individual who experienced this phenomenon make sense of their personal experiences. A total of nine homeless parents were recruited through purposive and snowballing method. Semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted. Data were transcribed verbatim and analysed manually using thematic analysis. Four major themes emerged from the analysis, each consisted of several subthemes namely self-perceptions (parenting, locus of control and social comparison), hardships (family problems, living condition, financial instability and stigma and discrimination), vulnerability (shame, fear, uncertainty, helplessness, rumination and upward comparison) and coping (personal and social). The results of the study showed that the participants are vulnerable to mental health problems, due to constant exposure to stress associated with homelessness. In spite of this, the coping mechanisms employed by the respondents were shown to mitigate the stress associated with homelessness. The findings of the present study could be helpful in raising public awareness about the plight of homelessness and assisting mental health providers in determining the most appropriate treatment to match the needs of homeless parents.
