Abstract text:
Since Covid-19's early months, scientific research in psychology has focused mainly on its impacts on population's mental health during and after this event. However, psychology can also analyze the pandemic from a psychosocial perspective, which considers it as an intensifier of issues already present in our society that are also causes of psychological distress. Therefore, an approach capable of analyzing this period under different determinants and suggesting ways to solve such problems from their origins is needed. In our research, we aimed to examine how Brazilian psychology fits into the discussions about the Covid-19 pandemic, focusing on proposals for social changes to improve this scenario. A systematic review of the literature was conducted, and the materials for analysis were collected from publications in Brazilian psychology journals indexed in the Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information (BIREME/PAHO/WHO) and the Scientific Electronic Library Online Brazil (Scielo). Among the 462 Covid-19 related articles published by March 2025, only 37 elaborated their debates through a psychosocial perspective. Our analysis revealed that more than half of the publications originated from the fields of social psychology and political psychology, reflecting the historical tendency within Brazilian psychology that social crises are topics primarily addressed by these disciplines. Additionally, the articles mainly proposed an epistemological shift in Brazilian psychology through a critical conception of this science, calling for the Brazilian state to act democratically through social public policies, and raising political and critical awareness among the population. Finally, we discussed the fragmentation of psychological science as a key component for lack of involvement of other fields in the psychosocial debate and in proposing concrete actions for social change, in light of the criticism of the Brazilian political and social scenario, as well as the implications of this for the resolution of social problems.
