Abstract text:
Introduction. The flow state and peak performance have been researched over the last 50 years in different contexts, including musical performance Tan and Sin (2021), yet the research in theatre performers is scarce and methodologically uneven. Performance strategies are viewed as "[t]he groundwork for these transcendent experiences" (Williamon,
2004, p. 31). In the field of theatre actors, performance strategies are essential parts of acting techniques but have never been researched in the context of sport psychology. Purpose. This paper aims to explore the relationship between performance strategies use and flow experiences in rehearsals and during performances. Method. Eight theatre actors were recruited working in theatre organisations and collectives across six European countries. A mixed study approach with topical analysis was applied. Quantitative data was collected using the TOPS2 questionnaire (Test of Performance Strategies 2) with its terminology adapted to acting. Qualitative data from interviews yielded codes including eight performance strategies found in athletes and further expanded to other relevant strategies and flow in theatre performance contexts. Results. Actors' use of performance strategies is overall high, the conceptualisation of some is different. The most used are activation, emotional and attentional control, while imagery is applied least. Flow state differs in rehearsals and performances. During plays, it is deemed equivalent to successful acting and achieved by automaticity development during rehearsals, high level of concentration, awareness and trust in one's body and stage partner. Flow experiences carry a strong feeling of connection. Conclusions. Performance strategies are applied to enter the flow state on stage. Insights could be used to support strategies training and adapt TOPS2 to stage performing.
