Although sexual harassment (SH) toward women is a pervasive issue in both social and workplace contexts, most studies and existing scales have focused on workplace behaviors. Addressing this gap, the present study, supported by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK-Project No: 124K975), aimed to develop a scale assessing both the experience and perception of SH in social contexts beyond the workplace, including interactions with family members, friends, romantic partners, and individuals in proximal physical, social, and cultural environments. Initially, 60 women were interviewed. Thematic analysis was conducted using MAXQDA. In addition to previously identified SH factors among Turkish employees (i.e., insinuation of interest, sexual hostility, sexist hostility, and physical SH), a novel theme emerged: manipulated consent. Manipulated consent describes situations in which women are pressured, coerced, or psychologically influenced to engage in sexual intimacy while being led to believe they are freely consenting, often through relational, emotional, or cultural justifications. Based on thematic analysis, a 51-item Sexual Harassment in Social Life (SHSL) scale with five factors was developed and administered to two independent samples of women. Exploratory factor analyses (N = 305), resulted in a 42-item version, where sexist hostility and physical SH merged under a single factor, forming a four-factor structure. Confirmatory Factor Analyses (N = 420) demonstrated good model fit. This four-factor structure was identical across both the experience and perceptions of SH. Cronbach's alphas ranged from .90 to .95. Construct validity was supported through correlations between the SHSL factors and ambivalent sexism, SH attitudes, right-wing authoritarianism, and religiosity. Findings support the scale's utility for assessing SH beyond the workplace, capturing behaviors within broader social and cultural contexts. SHSL content can be utilized in developing awareness programs combatting SH in social life.
