Abstract text:
The PERMATA Remaja program is an initiative under the PERMATA division under the Ministry of Education, Malaysia that strives to empower at-risk youth who are also categorized as urban poor around Kuala Lumpur. The objective of this program is to fill their free time, especially on weekends, with useful activities. At the same time, to prevent the youth from getting involved with various negative influences as well as crimes which can be easily found around their residential areas. This study is long-term longitudinal in nature where the PERMATA Remaja program has been started since 2010. The PERMATA Remaja program involves B40 youth aged 13 to 19 years old and is provided free of charge. In this program youth can choose from the five vocational classes that are being introduced: (1) photography, (2) cake & pastry, (3) music and vocal, (4) beauty and (5) button badges. Through these classes the youth are being taught through immersive experiential learning. Findings found that this program has yielded several major successes including (1) the opening of four community centres, (2) has obtained the participation of around 9,000 participants. (3) a total of 12 alumni has been appointed as teaching and working staffs, (4) the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) achievement has improved over the past 3 years, (5) more youths are continuing their studies at higher education institutions, (6) increased collaboration which has led to generation and (7) stronger internationalization program. Overall, this program has succeeded in empowering at-risk youths. This effort should be replicated to other areas so that more at-risk youth can benefit from the program throughout Malaysia.
