Introduction
It has been recognized that, regardless of workers' lifestyles and individual vulnerabilities, and beyond occupational diseases, exposure to certain psychosocial factors at work is crucial for the prevention, causation of illness, and health promotion. Furthermore, various theoretical models have incorporated the variable of self-efficacy due to the impact it has on health behaviors and outcomes. Occupational risk factors for workers' health have been identified in Mexico.
The Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ) has been recognized for its psychometric quality and theoretical foundation. COPSOQ-Istas21 III is available in Spanish.
Purpose
The purpose of the study was to adapt and assess the psychometric quality of the COPSOQ-III instrument and associated measures for psychosocial risk assessment and research in a sample of Mexican workers.
Method
Fifteen psychosocial risk factor scales of the COPSOQ-Istas21 III, and the self-efficacy scale of the international COPSOQ III were adapted. The self-efficacy scale was translated, reconciled, back-translated, and peer-reviewed. The syntax of 7 items from the psychosocial risk factor scales was adapted. The resulting instrument underwent content validation. The battery was administered to a sample of workers (n=325) with different occupational profiles, including managers, professionals, and operational workers. Psychometric quality was assessed.
Results
High item clarity scores were obtained, with Aiken's V between .875 and 1.
The adapted COPSOQ III showed a factor structure similar to the Spanish version. Most items were retained, with loadings between .40 and ≥ .80, and ≥ 3 items per factor. Except for one scale, reliability coefficients were ≥ .70. The psychometric quality is adequate.
Conclusions
The COPSOQ III for the Mexican population can be used for psychosocial assessment and interventions, providing a broader range of factors assessed with a theoretically sound instrument.
