We locate the pragmatic value of integrated waterscapes for psychological, physical, and social wellbeing based on the Indian polymath Rabindranath Tagore's two primary contributions about 100 years ago in rural Bengal, India. Tagore channelised his creative notions to form real spaces of human interaction and habitation: Visva Bharati, an international university at Santiniketan, blending his ideas on education with ecological vision; and Sriniketan, a model village using his rural reconstruction designs for revival of the understanding and conservation of natural resources. Tagore's ideas resonate both with the psychological symbolism of water and modern scientific findings about the impact of water on our mind stemming from environmental, cognitive, and neuro psychology. Water was integral to the ecological interconnectedness facilitating dialogues between its environmental value and psychological underpinnings. Water in Santiniketan thrived as a living presence within the university and also reflected in the curriculum designs. The natural water bodies provided spaces for meditation, artistic creation, and scientific observation mirroring the dynamic process of learning, self-realization, and mental wellbeing. Tagore's vision of immersion in natural water bodies at Santiniketan parallels contemporary environmental psychology's emphasis on the restorative and calming effects of water on the human mind. As Sriniketan emerged as a site of rural reconstruction, water was central to his ideas on sustainable agriculture, sanitation, and community wwefare. Through a network of small rivers and ponds, inclusive water management practices were adapted to local ecology - an undercurrent to integrate psychological findings about community-based water conservation and behavioral insights on sustainable water practices. What sets our case apart is the pragmatics of Water in Santiniketan and Sriniketan, not simply as an environmental feature but as an integerated idea of waterscapes, exemplifying a holistic vision to development where natural elements are central to fostering ecological balance, cultural values, vitality, education, and well-being.
