Abstract text:
Background: The notions about masculinity possess an obstruction to seeking help and contribute to poor rapport formation and communication. It is also a significant factor in high number of male suicides, although the rate of men dealing with mental health issue signifies otherwise. It is hence deemed important to address this gap while also supporting the mental health of men in an empathetic manner conforming to SDG 03 (good health and well-being) , SDG 05 (gender equality) and SDG 10 (reduced inequalities).

Aim: The study attempts to shed light upon the influence of stigmas in dealing with men's mental health while addressing the downside of hegemonic ideals as a hindering factor in help seeking behavior, and promoting the male suicide rates.

Method: Various systematic databases like PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, PsycINFO and Web of Science were used to extract relevant information. Multiple research papers and reviews were searched with relevant keywords. The focus was to seek a relationship between stigmas and help-seeking behavior and mental health issues.

Result: The study analyzed various themes concerning men's mental health such as contribution of stigmas and hegemonic masculine ideals in impacting help seeking and suicidal behavior of men. It is found that work and family environment, substance abuse and inability to deal with emotions is a contributing factor in suicidal ideation. A sense of connectedness, emotional support and ones' surrounding facilitate the well-being of an individual dealing with mental health issues. Thus, it is found that stigmas are a detrimental factor in men's mental health and gender- sensitive approaches and acknowledging the issue in a supportive manner can be a positive factor in tackling it.
