Marriage is the union of man and woman through followed customs and traditions which brings along certain expectations from both spouse and their family members. These expectations when unmet leads towards dissatisfaction in relationship and marital instability. This review aims to understand the relationship between marital expectations, dissatisfaction, and divorce. For this, the databases of PsychInfo, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Proquest were searched using key terms "marital expectations, "marital satisfaction, "marital dissatisfaction" and "divorce." The systematic review followed the PRISMA guidelines. A total of 280 papers were identified initially. Selection and quality assessment was conducted by two independent reviewers and any disagreement was resolved by consensus. 80 papers were selected based on their relevance to the studies. After further exclusion a total of 40 papers were finalized. In this study Author Miss Somya Agarwal conceptualised the framework of paper, including the objectives, research questions and purpose of the study and designed the methodology to be used. She also interpreted the results derived from data analysis of previous studies. Author Miss Ananya Arora drafted the section of literature review, contributed towards visualisation, extracted data from previous studies and highlighted limitations of the paper and final editing and reviewing of the paper he findings of previous studies have determined a correlation between high expectations and divorce. They also suggest that Unmet expectations lead towards distress and disappointment in relationships. The outcomes have also shown marital dissatisfaction as a factor contributing towards divorce. These findings can be used by marital counsellors to identify various intervention techniques which can be used in their counselling process to improve overall satisfaction of individuals in their marital relationships.
