Over 1,000 new HIV cases were recorded in the Philippines in February
2022. Antiretroviral treatment (ART), a daily combination of medicines, has
transformed HIV into a manageable condition by reducing the viral load to
undetectable levels. Despite its effectiveness, many patients struggle with
adherence.
Using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), the experiences of
eight men living with HIV on ART, aged 21-34, were studied. Three main
themes emerged: "Facing the Unknown," "Stepping Back in the Closet,"
and "A Dose of Hope."
"Facing the Unknown" describes their journey with HIV and its impact on
various aspects of their lives. "Stepping Back in the Closet" addresses the
circumstantial challenges that compel them to conceal their condition. "A
Dose of Hope" highlights how they navigate new directions and hope
through adherence to ART.
