Abstract text:
Introduction: This study focuses on the lived experiences of acid attack survivors who have faced physical, societal, psychological, and emotional challenges stemming from trauma, discrimination, and societal bias. Despite the trauma, many survivors in India reconstruct their lives with courage and resilience. This study explores their lived experiences to identify psychosocial challenges and recovery pathways. Purpose: The research aimed to understand the multidimensional experiences of women who survived acid, focusing on trauma, identity reconstruction, social response, and resilience-building mechanisms post-incident. Method: A qualitative narrative approach was utilised, featuring in-depth semi-structured interviews with five survivors from Sheroes Hangout Café, Noida, India. Thematic analysis was performed through inductive coding, identifying patterns in medical, legal, psychological, and societal areas. The data was arranged into themes employing a framework strategy that highlighted common and distinct survivor journeys. Results: Seven major thematic domains emerged: (1) Attack Circumstances and Medical Response, (2) Legal and Justice System, (3) Family and Social Support, (4) Psychological Recovery, (5) Education and Vocational Rehabilitation, (6) Identity and Empowerment, and (7) Societal Attitudes and Advocacy. Despair and isolation were common at initial stage, but participants gradually transitioned toward empowerment through NGO support, education, peer inspiration, and community engagement. While systemic failures were evident in legal justice and financial support, survivors actively challenged stigma and reclaimed agency through advocacy, employment, and entrepreneurship. Conclusions: Survivors' journeys highlight both structural gaps and transformative resilience. Findings advocate for trauma-informed, survivor-centred interventions and policy reforms to enhance holistic rehabilitation and societal reintegration. These narratives not only demand justice but also reframe survivors as empowered agents of change in a society still grappling with gender-based violence.
