Abstract text:
Inclusion, diversity, and sustainability are frequently discussed topics in organizational discourse and the world of work, highlighting that everyone has the opportunity to work, especially those who have traditionally found the doors to work closed, including people with disabilities. Expanding career research is a demand in the field, and therefore, this study aimed to understand and understand the experiences and meanings of work for people with visual impairments in Brazil. The study was epistemologically grounded in socioconstructionism and from the perspective of Work Psychology Theory (WPT). Through semi-structured interviews, four visually impaired people—two men and two women—with at least five years of experience in the job market, were interviewed about their work experiences. Content analysis from the perspective of Work Psychology Theory (WPT) was used to obtain the results. In this research, the objective is to present the career development process of one of the participants, identified as Cecília, and to invite reflection that encompasses the psychological and sociocultural aspects of the work experiences of people commonly marginalized in the Brazilian context. The authors pointed out that accessibility difficulties, limited job opportunities in some market segments, gender issues, lack of or insufficient assistive technology resources, and attitudinal and personnel management issues hinder the career development of people with visual impairments. Through Cecília's story, you can learn about and reflect on the career development process of people with disabilities, its opportunities and limitations, and, from this, contribute to researchers and professional and career advisors in other countries' understanding of the impacts of contextual and structural dimensions on the lives of people with disabilities from the Brazilian context.
