Abstract text:
Racial microaggressions are brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults toward migrant groups (Sue et al., 2007). Despite the constant increase in migration flows and the number of people forced to leave their countries of origin, there is still relatively little empirical research exploring the lived experiences of migrants in Europe (Piccinelli et al., 2024). This study aims to explore perceptions, narratives, and recurring themes related to microaggressions and discrimination reported by first and second-generation migrants residing in Lombardy. Adopting a qualitative design, the study is based on 30 semi-structured interviews conducted with adult participants selected to reflect diverse migratory backgrounds (including age, gender, ethnicity, and area of origin) in order to explore both direct and indirect experiences of discrimination and microaggressions, as well as their impacts on identity, daily life, and integration processes. The interview grid was designed to investigate direct and indirect experiences of microaggressions, focusing on whether such phenomena occur in migrants' lives, how they develop, and affect daily life. . A thematic analysis of the material collected through the interviews was conducted using NVivo software. This allowed for a systematic and in-depth exploration of the different forms and patterns of microaggressions, offering initial insights into the dynamics and common experiences among participants interviewed. This exploratory phase serves as the foundation for a future quantitative study aimed at systematically analyzing the forms and psychosocial consequences of microaggressions against the migrant population.
