Abstract text:
The "birthday blues" is a universal phenomenon characterized by feelings of sadness or emotional distress around one's birthday. A mixed method approach was deemed suitable for the research. There were 4 objectives established "To empirically establish relevance and prevalence of studying the Birthday Blue Phenomenon", "To establish Life satisfaction, Hopes and Moods and feelings associated with/ impacting Birthday Blues", "To determine the demographic variables impacting Birthday Blues", "To explore the concept of birthday blues in depth using qualitative method." For each objective further research questions were devised. Data was collected with the help of Birthday blues questionnaire which was adapted and validated for Indian Population. The results showed that in our study there is a significant increase in negative emotions around birthday. It was found that the effect of satisfaction with life is mediated by the moods and feelings experienced around the birthday that further led to birthday blues. It was also found that gender varies the effect of birthday blues in our population. Finally, the qualitative analysis revealed the factors affecting emotions about birthdays and its celebrations, emotions experienced around birthdays, significance of birthday and what it represents, thoughts around birthdays, expectations around birthday, cultural rituals associated to birthdays, major reasons for birthday blues, and its implication on work and relationships. The research has implications in clinical and counselling settings.
