Abstract text:
The effectiveness of healthcare workers (HCWs) is not determined only by their technical and professional expertise. Indeed, soft skills play a pivotal role, as these competencies can bridge the gap between theory and practice by enabling HCWs to translate theoretical knowledge into effective professional behaviours. Nevertheless, the existing literature on this topic has predominantly focused on individual skills, while limited research has examined the integrated contribution of multiple soft skills to performance, particularly within the healthcare context. Accordingly, this study aims to explore the role of soft skills related to decision-making—also known as non-technical skills (NTS)—as personal resources for HCWs in hospital emergency departments. Specifically, it investigates the relationships among transversal competencies, organizational resources, and performance. A sample of 78 hospital emergency HCWs (51.3% female; M_{age} = 43.60, SD_{age} = 11.91) completed an online self-report questionnaire assessing the variables under investigation. Key findings indicate that problem-solving-oriented decision-making, perceived self-efficacy, relational competencies, and emotional intelligence were positively associated with job performance. This study underscores the multidimensional nature of healthcare performance, which depends not only on technical expertise but also on its integration with organizational resources and a combination of cognitive, emotional, and relational soft skills.
