Abstract text:
This study explored the experiences of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in relation to pet ownership, emphasizing its role in social and emotional development. Using semi-structured interviews with three primary caregivers, a cross-case analysis was conducted to identify similarities and differences across cases. Findings revealed that while the presence of companion animals had little impact on established routines, certain challenges were evident, such as caring for older pets and managing the high energy demands of pet care. Despite these difficulties, two of the three cases showed that companion animals enhanced social interactions and provided companionship. Conversations about pets were also observed to improve the quality of social exchanges within families. However, one case highlighted adverse behaviors that escalated into aggression, limiting the potential benefits of pet ownership. These results highlight the importance of considering individual differences when evaluating the benefits and challenges of companion animals for individuals with ASD. The study also emphasized how pets can foster social connections, strengthen emotional well-being, and promote family interaction, while pointing to the need for tailored supports to address potential risks. Caregiver perspectives were used as the primary source of data, providing insights that help account for the communication and social interaction difficulties often experienced by individuals with ASD. By situating these findings within the broader context of human-animal interaction, this research contributes to the understanding of how companion animals may influence the development of social skills in special populations. The outcomes also provide valuable insights for practitioners and policymakers in designing interventions and developing inclusive guidelines that support the unique needs of individuals with ASD in the Philippines.
