Abstract text:
Counseling in contexts of complex life stories—such as recovery from substance use disorders (SUD) and experiences of migration—requires approaches that move beyond individual traits to encompass the systemic influences shaping people's lives. Narrative tools grounded in the Systems Theory Framework provide a reflective process that reveals the interplay of personal, relational, and contextual factors. This approach also opens the way to integrative perspectives that, while starting from a specific need, extend to broader life domains. This contribution draws on two studies that applied the My System of Career Influences (MSCI) to adults in residential rehabilitation for SUD and to adults with migration histories. Despite differences in vulnerability, both groups revealed recurring systemic themes as well as the unique significance of specific influences. Common themes included the central role of family, the importance of interpersonal relationships, the impact of social and environmental conditions, reflections on identity and values, and aspirations for the future. In both contexts, participants engaged in meaning- making and self-reflection that heightened awareness of overlooked influences, strengthened agency, and fostered constructive change. At the same time, context-specific themes emerged: health, stigma, and identity reconstruction were particularly salient among adults in recovery, while cultural background, mobility, and recognition from external authorities (e.g., managers, leaders) played a central role among migrants. Taken together, these findings highlight the potential of an integrative narrative approach to counseling. Moreover, by adopting a systemic lens, both intraindividual dimensions (identity, values, agency) and contextual dimensions (family, networks, structural barriers) can be addressed, providing practical guidance for holistic, inclusive, and effective counselling interventions with individuals experiencing complex transitions.
