Abstract text:
Pornography is a medium that impacts the formation, arousal and sexual development of young people, having a unique role among those who identify as gays, bisexuals and pansexuals. Objective: This study investigated perspectives on the use of pornography by non-heterosexual youth, focusing on its impact on their sexual development, self-esteem, expectations of partners, and sexual behaviors. Methods: The research included a quantitative stage using scales and a questionnaire (N = 42) and a qualitative stage, with in-depth interviews (N = 5). Descriptive and inferential analyses were conducted, in addition to a qualitative analysis, by means of the Collective Subject Discourse method. Results: The data were organized into three axes: the role of pornography in sexual development; self-esteem, self-image and expectations of sexual partners; and pornography and sexual behavior. Pornography was perceived as a learning tool, but also as something that promotes rigid sexual scripts and idealized standards. Correlation analyses indicated an association between greater consumption of pornography and a larger number of sexual partners was observed. Furthermore, lower levels of sexual satisfaction were associated with a higher perceived utility of pornography. Conclusions: The findings highlight the importance of sexual education programs that critically address pornography consumption.
