Abstract
Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by excessive body fat that compromises health. It is not merely an aesthetic concern since it is associated with a wide range of health problems, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, joint problems, and certain types of cancer. Beyond its physical effects, obesity also negatively influences individuals' self-esteem and psychological well-being as well. The consequences of obesity are not limited to the individual level, as they extend to society through increased healthcare costs, economic and cognitive productivity losses, and reductions in overall quality of life. Therefore, addressing obesity and conducting research on this issue are crucial both for individuals and for society at large. This study aims to deeply explore the experiences of individuals diagnosed with obesity and to examine how they interpret obesity within the context of their subjective experience, while taking into account social, cultural, and relational factors. To achieve this aim, five to ten participants will be recruited through purposive sampling, and semi-structured interviews will be conducted. Data will be analyzed through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), which allows for an in-depth understanding and interpretation of personal experiences. Participants' statements will be grouped into themes and interpreted from a psychoanalytic perspective, primarily utilizing the Lacanian framework. The findings are expected to provide rich insights into how individuals experience and make sense of obesity, while also highlighting both personal and societal dimensions of this complex phenomenon.
