A substantial body of research has examined the adaptability of the VIA-72 across different cultures, revealing inconsistencies in factor structures. Testing psychometric properties of the VIA-72 is limited in Myanmar, and this study aimed to validate the Burmese version of the VIA-72 in preservice teacher education by investigating the 24 character strengths grounded in Peterson and Seligman's classification. Student teachers from seven Education Degree Colleges were selected through simple random sampling and completed the Burmese VIA-72, Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4). The questionnaires were translated into Burmese by experts in Myanmar, following the translation guidelines provided by the VIA Institute. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA; N = 304) was conducted, followed by confirmatory factor analyses (CFA; N = 593) testing three-, four-, and six-factor models. The EFA supported a four-factor structure, explaining 39.57% of the total variance, with factor loadings ranging from .34 to .81. The factors were renamed to reflect the cultural context. CFA results confirmed that the four-factor model demonstrated the best relative fit among the tested alternatives (χ²/df = 1.87, CFI = .82, TLI = .81, RMSEA = .039, SRMR = .038). Although the model did not fully meet conventional fit benchmarks, the strong RMSEA and SRMR values indicate that it still captures meaningful aspects of character strengths in the Myanmar context. This result reflects cultural differences in how character strengths are organized. The four factors demonstrated good internal consistency (α = .8 to .85) and conceptual coherence. Correlations with SWLS and PHQ-4 provided further evidence of construct validity. The findings indicate that the Burmese VIA-72 is a suitable measure for assessing character strengths of the Burmese-speaking population. This validation contributes to cross-cultural research on character strengths and supports the integration of positive psychology in Myanmar teacher education.
