Abstract text:
Organizations increasingly realize the value of integrating sustainability in their strategic directions and value-creation processes. Aligning organizational norms, structures, systems and processes with the ESG (environment social and governance) framework is crucial in ensuring that leaders and employees uphold their commitment to the organization's goal of having a sustainable future. Using a multi-case study approach, this study examined recent annual sustainability reports and collected data through semi-structured interviews with sustainability leaders of seven business organizations in the Philippines, a developing country in Southeast Asia that consistently experiences environmental and socio-economic challenges. Results of the reflexive thematic analysis and cross-case comparison illustrate how external conditions (e.g. government regulations and environmental threats) and internal realities (e.g. operations and financial resources) shape how sustainability initiatives are carried out in these companies. Findings also demonstrated how sustainability is integrated in the organization's Mission and Goals that then sets direction for Leadership and Governance. At the core of the sustainability efforts are Strategic Initiatives (e.g. culture building; stakeholder engagement; institutionalizing sustainable practices and systems), that highlight concrete actions undertaken by the organizations to materialize its sustainability commitments. To evaluate the success and ensure accountability, organizations rely on Data and Metrics (e.g. key performance indicators) that orient the refinement of initiatives and guide further actions. This study contributes to applied psychology by offering a model for embedding sustainability within organizations, particularly in the context of a developing nation. The findings highlight the critical role of leadership in shaping organizational behavior and fostering a commitment to sustainability, offering practical implications for promoting environmentally and socially responsible practices in diverse organizational settings. This research underscores the application of psychological principles in understanding and driving organizational change towards a sustainable future.
