Abstract text:
The youth may be encouraged to engage with the environment in their own personal and meaningful way by giving them the opportunity to be aware of their environment using an aesthetic perspective. In the context of training students to view environment—their ordinary surroundings—with fresh eyes, find what they perceive to be beautiful in their surroundings, and sense a connection through an appreciation of beauty in their surroundings. Using the transpersonal psychology perspective of valuing the aesthetic experience to counter the deterioration of urban landscape and mindless destruction of nature (Ferrucci, 1982), this qualitative study explored into the aesthetic experiences of adolescents in appreciating beauty in their ordinary environment in an urban setting and exploring their aesthetic faculty by creating an object from their engagement with the environment. Twenty-two college students participated in this study and the beauty they perceived is mostly rooted in natural world (e.g., plants, the sky, trees), and directed towards scenes of human connection (e.g., two children sharing an ice cream on the street). From their perception of beauty, they produced creative products relating to aesthetic experience focused on nature and using various creative mediums (painting, photography, spoken word poetry, crafts). Their aesthetic engagement with their ordinary urban environment elicited feelings of happiness, peace, and gratitude; and they reported psychological benefits of increased life satisfaction, a deep sense of appreciation, and a change or expansion of their perspective on life. Findings of this study provide a compelling insight into the capacity of the youth for environmental engagement grounded in the aesthetic experience of appreciating beauty, creative expression of the engagement and positive emotions. This paper advocates for a creative pedagogical approach to promoting environmental engagement and stewardship among the youth and offers practical recommendations for designing programs in the school and community settings.
