Abstract text:
This paper investigates whether the expectation of future sufficient eldercare provided by the pension system would influence current parenting styles. Using China's New Rural Pension Scheme (NRPS) as a quasi-natural experiment, we conducted a staggered triple difference model on the county-by-county level. We found that the launch of NRPS increased permissive parenting by 7.3% and decreased authoritarian parenting by 5.0%. Mechanism analysis suggested that this phenomenon may be attributed to parents' lowered expectations of receiving elder care from their children. Changes in parenting styles would lead to improved children's mental health. Cross-national comparisons further validate the universal association between the social pension and the democratization of child-rearing approaches. This paper provides micro-level evidence for understanding the transformative effects of pension policies on intergenerational family dynamics.
