In recent years, the labour market has been strongly influenced by technological development. In this context, technologies play a central role, representing an indispensable means capable of providing agile forms of response to evolving needs. Within the digital scenario, online platforms are configured as one of the main devices capable of creating a connection between supply and demand, i.e. between individuals and professionals. The psychological field is not exempt from the expansion of these technological mediators: in fact, numerous are the platforms, born in recent years in Italy, that play an intermediation role between psychologists/psychotherapists and patients.
This research studies the use of a platform dedicated to psychological counselling services. Thanks to the use of a qualitative methodology, by means of interviews and focus groups, it was possible to study in depth the organizational culture, practices and tools used by professionals.
The results of the research highlight how the use of digital platforms impacts on the profession of psychologist and psychotherapist, causing changes and transformations in the working practices and tools used. Furthermore, it is shown how this change in the profession, brought about by the digital mediator under examination, brings with it a predictable impact on the professional identity and on the professional's belonging to the community of reference.
