Abstract text:
Social support is one of the most reliable predictors of positive psychological outcomes. However, the salutary effects of social support are embedded in a social-cultural context. In spite of this, current scales that measure social support were based on WEIRD contexts. In addition, the literature presents three facets of social support: received social support, perceived social support, and social embeddedness. Of these facets, received social support is arguably the most useful in intervention, but is also the least studied. To address these gaps, the current study aimed to develop and validate a received social support scale that is grounded in the Filipino social and cultural experience. Forty-one items were created based on Guilaran et al.'s (2025) Filipino received social support dimensions. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on 243 Filipino adults resulted in a 22-item scale (α=.945). Convergent validity was tested through the Lubben Social Network Scales, Questionnaire on the Frequency of and Satisfaction with Social Support, and the Berlin Social Support Scales, all with acceptable validity coefficients. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
