Abstract text:
INTRODUCTION Relationships are fundamental in people's lives and represent an essential human need (Perlman, 2007). Recent decades have seen a drastic alteration in the way humans interact and communicate, both online and offline, within a sociocultural context where the digital transformation has brought about significant changes in society (Van Veldhoven & Vanthienen, 2022). Considering that, and according to the Interdependence Theory (Kelley & Thibaut, 1959; 1978), which states that relationships change interdependently with the characteristics of the social and physical environment (Van Lange & Balliet, 2015), it is essential to understand how social relationships develop and how the connections among young adults are characterized.
PURPOSE An exploratory research study was conducted to investigate the quality and features of young adults' interpersonal relationships, considering various levels (dyadic couple, family, peer group, social).
METHOD A sample of 56 young adults between 19 and 21 (58.9% women) was recruited via a Psychology course at the degree level. The textual corpora, consisting of the collection of individual responses, are subjected to Thematic Analysis of Elementary Contexts through T-Lab Plus, to explore the main contents.
RESULTS Transversal characteristics emerged with respect to the quality of interpersonal relationships that are described as characterized by depth and superficiality. An intense ambivalence, with both positive and negative elements and expectations, also characterize each relation. Positive aspects are intimacy and trust, as expressions of respect and justice, a sense of fairness and mattering for others, and presence. Instead, the negative aspects include competitiveness and a lack of commitment and respect. Time dedicated to relationships is regarded as vital for personal development and building the future. A preference for offline relationships is also noted.
CONCLUSIONS This emphasizes understanding relationship qualities to foster authentic social connections and build strong social networks among young adults. It also raises questions about technology's role in this process.
