Abstract text:
In recent years, the digitalization of work and, specifically, the successful management of a company's digital transformation have been prominent topics in work and organizational psychology. Previous literature in this area states that low individual digital transformation readiness of employees is a key obstacle to successful digital transformation. Building on this foundation, the present study examines anticipated technostress, specifically the dimensions of techno-invasion and techno-uncertainty, as potential antecedents of low individual digital transformation readiness. Since creating change readiness in employees at the initial introductory stage of a change process is crucial for successful change implementation, this study focuses on anticipatory feelings of technostress, why they arise, and how they affect individual digital transformation readiness. Therefore, this study investigates the effect of anticipated technostress and techno-invasion and techno-uncertainty as two specific dimensions of technostress on individual digital transformation readiness. A vignette experiment was conducted to examine these relationships. 42 participants were randomly exposed to vignettes that aimed at eliciting feelings of anticipatory high or low technostress before responding to items measuring individual digital transformation readiness. The data obtained did not support the hypothesized relationships between anticipated technostress (specifically techno-invasion and techno-uncertainty) and individual digital transformation readiness. Thus, technostress might not be as important regarding digital transformation as expected. Instead, future research should focus on other internal as well as external (organizational) variables that might impact individual digital transformation readiness to help managers set the stage for successful digital transformation in a company. (A second round of data collection will be implemented before the conference.)
