In recent decades, environmental challenges have become increasingly prevalent globally. Most
pressing environmental threats are global warming, urban air pollution, biodiversity loss, and
water scarcity. Eco-anxiety can be a transient experience, fluctuating within individuals over
time based on their daily encounters and contexts. People worry about their health, their
children's health, and the prospects for future generations. They feel deep sadness, hopelessness,
and annoyance when they witness the negative effects of climate change. Despite the
acknowledgement of individual psychological responses to environmental issues, a
comprehensive understanding of relationships among eco-anxiety, pro-environmental behavior,
and psychological well-being remains understudied. Aim: The study aims to examine the
relationship among pro-environmental behavior, eco-anxiety and psychological well-being
among youth. It also seeks to explore whether pro-environmental behavior serves as a
moderating factor in the in the relationship between eco-anxiety and psychological well-being.
Participants: A total of 213 participants (145 female & 68 male) youth aged 18 to 30 years were
drawn from different metropolitan cities (New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, etc.) of India, by
applying convenient sampling method. Data has been drawn by sharing the google form on
different social media platforms. Measure of eco-anxiety, pro-environmental behavior and
psychological well-being were used to assess variables under study. Correlation analysis reveals
that pro-environmental behavior was found to be positively and eco-anxiety negatively
associated with the psychological well-being of participants. Stepwise regression analysis reveals
that both pro-environmental behavior and eco-anxiety emerged as strong predictor of
psychological well-being. Pro-environmental behavior has also significantly moderated
relationship of relationship of eco-anxiety and psychological well-being. The study highlights
that eco-anxiety negatively impacts youth's psychological well-being, while pro-environmental
behavior has a positive influence. Importantly, engaging in pro-environmental actions buffers the
adverse effects of eco-anxiety. These findings underscore the importance of promoting
sustainable behaviors to enhance mental health and resilience among environmentally concerned
youth.
