122 - COLLECTIVE SELF-ESTEEM: A VARIABLE NEEDED TO EXAMINE ACROSS THE CULTURES

Abstract text:
Identity and self-esteem are most important aspect of any individual. Self-esteem plays a crucial role in well-being. Human are social being too and the most important expression of this sociality is that we live, and have to live in social groups. Thus social identity and self-esteem belongs to our social group, which called collective self- esteem are also very important aspect of the individual. Studies showed that Collective self-esteem is an important construct which influences Well-being. Available researches indicates that collective self-esteem were studied with psychological well-being in Euro-American Context. However researchers largely ignored to study collective self-esteem with emotional well-being and social well-being; and another important aspect multi-cultural context. The present study examined the relationship between collective self-esteem and well-being in Uni-cultural and Multi-cultural society. The data were collected from 300 adults (age ranges from 25-40 years) from different tribal groups (150 participant; 90 Male and 60 Female) and people from Varanasi and Azamgarh city, Uttar Pradesh (150 participants; 70 Male and 80 Female) which represents Uni-cultural and Multi-cultural society. The self-report measures of the aforementioned constructs were used to collect data. Local assistance were used to collect data from tribal groups. Bi-variate correlation and step-wise regression analysis were done to test the hypothesis. Analysis revealed that collective self-esteem and psychological and social well-being correlated positively in Uni-cultural group (tribal groups) but collective self-esteem and social well-being correlated negatively in Multi-cultural society (Varanasi and Azamgarh). The analysis also revealed that private collective self-esteem and importance to identity play most important role to determine the relationship between Collective self-esteem and well-being. The findings were discussed in the light of existing literature.
