This special session explores how business ecosystems (BEs) can enhance operations management (OM) in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environments. Traditional OM, focused on efficiency, stability and productivity in spite of flexibility, agility and even reconfigurability considerations, struggles to adapt to today's dynamic challenges. The session begins by outlining classical OM principles and their limitations in VUCA contexts. It then presents three case studies—ARM plc, the Shanzhai phenomenon in China, and the UK's COVID-19 ventilator initiative—to illustrate adaptive strategies. The concept of BEs is introduced though the Tornado Model (T-Model) highlighting BEs' dynamic structure and mechanisms, while the New Product-Process Matrix (NPPM) helps identify solution scenarios. The session concludes by highlighting the benefits of studying BEs for the SCOM community, including improved resilience, innovation, and adaptability, and encourages future research and collaboration. The panel members include Professor Yufeng Zhang (Birmingham University) and Professor Yongyi Shou (Zhejiang University).
