Universities across Europe and the UK are playing a leading role in the transition to a sustainable future, increasingly aligning their construction activities with the SDGs, the EU Green Deal, and national climate strategies. As major developers and building operators,
universities are under growing pressure to ensure that their projects deliver long-term environmental value. Yet, many institutions still lack dedicated sustainability assessment frameworks, and existing tools often fall short in practical application. This is especially true
when it comes to integrating forward-looking concepts such as the circular economy and validating building performance during use.
This session will explore how sustainability assessment can be more effectively embedded into university construction processes. It will encourage discussion on current practices, key barriers to implementation, and lessons learned from international case studies. The session will also highlight emerging methods and technologies, including digital tools and data- driven approaches, that enhance sustainability tracking and proactive decision-making.
