In the context of the irreversible crisis of the socio-economic and cultural structures on which it was based the Western Roman Empire imposed the decisive role of monasticism in the process of transmission of the textual and book heritage of classical antiquity to the Middle Ages and the modern age.
The volume focuses on the monastic experience in its relationship with books and culture. The introductory chapters  are dedicated to the conflict between paganism and Christianity, to the genesis of the movement Western monastic, to the scriptorium and the library, to the Carolingian reform, also in relation to the school experience. The second part illustrates the training program adopted in monasteries, gradually organized according to the epistemological perspective of the artes liberales. The discussion is based on the idea of offering a cross-section of monastic culture through the dialogue between manuscripts and literary sources. The book presents an extensive bibliographical material.
