Trimarchi Santi
Santi Trimarchi, MD, PhD, is a vascular surgeon. His clinical interests include both open surgery and
endovascular treatment of thoracic, thoracoabdominal and abdominal aortic diseases, primarily dissections
and aneurysms. He also treats supra-aortic, visceral, renal, and peripheral vessel diseases.
Prof. Trimarchi earned his medical degree cum laude from the University of Messina, Italy. He completed a
residency in vascular surgery and a fellowship in cardiac and thoracic vascular surgery at the University of
Milan, Italy. He was research scientist for thoracic aortic diseases at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor,
USA (2006), and at Yale University, New Haven, USA (2008). In 2008, he completed a Master in
Endovascular Techniques (MET) at the University of Milan-Bicocca, Italy, and in 2012 he earned a PhD from
Utrecht University, the Netherlands, focusing on insights into acute aortic dissection. In 2014 he completed
the Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Program (GCSRTP) at the Harvard Medical School. He was a
visiting professor at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, USA (2011), at the Massachusetts General
Hospital, Boston, USA, (2014), at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, USA (2017) and at the Beth Israel
Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, USA, (2017). He was invited in these prestigious centers to present on
aortic dissections.
From 1997 to 2018, Prof. Trimarchi has been serving as attending surgeon at the IRCCS Policlinico San
Donato - Cardiovascular Center in Milan, becoming director of the Thoracic Aortic Research Center in 2011,
and head of the section of Vascular Surgery in 2015. From November 2018, he is head of the Vascular
Surgery Unit at Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico in Milan. So far, he has
performed about 3900 operations, both with open and endovascular techniques. From April 2015 to
November 2021, Prof. Trimarchi was an Associate Professor of Vascular Surgery at the University of Milan,
where, since October 2016, he chairs the vascular surgery residency program. From December 2021 he is a
Full Professor of Vascular Surgery at the University of Milan. He is also Co-director, in collaboration with
Prof. Auricchio (Department of Architecture and Engineering of University of Pavia), of the Beta Lab -
Biomechanics for Endovascular Treatment of the Aorta, a research laboratory focusing on thoracic aortic
computational fluid dynamics and simulations, in-vitro and ex-vivo studies and 3D printing program.
As an active researcher, Prof. Trimarchi is co-PI of the International Registry of Acute Aortic Dissection
(IRAD), co-director of the IRAD Surgical/Endovascular program, co-PI of the Gore GREAT registry, and co-
investigator in other international registries, including the European Registry of EVAR complication (EuREC)
and the International Aortic Arch Surgery Study Group (IAASSG). In addition, he is promoter and supervisor
of a PhD program on aortic diseases, in collaboration with Utrecht University, the Netherlands, and the
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA.
Prof. Trimarchi has authored more than 264 publications, has given more than 380 national and
international speeches and has served as faculty at several international congresses. He is a member of the
European Society for Vascular Surgery, the Italian Society of Cardiac Surgery, the Italian Society of Vascular
and Endovascular Surgery, and the American Heart Association.
Santi Trimarchi is married with Francesca, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, and they have a boy,
Filippo, who is 12 yrs old. All the family love sports and outdoor activities that they do with their friends.
