It sounds cliché, but it is true that histography on female sport remains very limited (Munkwitz 2018, Valiente 2020). So also has female agency and contribution to shaping modern sport narrative received little attention, partly due to scholars' much more focus on institutional history, male sport, and male agency. This was when, in a rather unfriendly environment for female competitive sport, female actors like the Spanish athlete Lilí Álvarez (1905-1998) engaged in competitive sport and actively promoted sport for everyone. Álvarez was a unique voice in the first half of the twentieth century who perceived sport differently. Thanks to her integral anthropology, she saw a connection between sport and spirituality, believing that one could encounter God through the exercise of the body. In this presentation, I aim to discuss 1) Álvarez's integral theology of the body and 2) her transcendental and mystical notion of sport.
