Text:
Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was a twelfth-century, German visionary mystic based in the Rhineland. For some forty years, Hildegard was moving both privately and publicly, rather compellingly, within what we could call a 'pneumatological-based' spirituality. The exercise of this spirituality propelled her in a time of rupture involving church controversies, war, natural disaster, and political upheaval. She understood the power within her spirituality, how to yield it and be yielded by it, how to allow it to nourish her whilst also directing her / collaborating with her to give hope and counsel to those in need, minister healing to the wounded, and to guide or correct the politically powerful. This pneumatological-based spirituality continues to exist with its agapeic disposition and availability to all. The paper seeks to discuss Hildegard's exercise of such a spirituality, demonstrating its transformative power for the individual person and society from her times to its relevance to our current, tumultuous times. My investigation will include philosophical, theological, anthropological, and ethical analyses.
