This presentation intends to be an initial effort to study the academic production in Mainland China concerning what is commonly referred to as "Western Esotericism." It aims to map and genealogically trace the evolution of the study of esotericism within a cultural, linguistic, and political context significantly removed from the Euro-American academic tradition. Particular attention is devoted to translations and the pivotal role of translators in the complex task of transferring concepts from European alphabetic languages to a logographic one like Mandarin. By exploring contemporary Chinese translingual and meaning-making strategies, this study reveals how Chinese scholars engaged in translating "Western Esotericism" are not merely interpreting foreign (Western) terms and discourses but are also creating new theoretical frameworks within their indigenous tradition. Lastly, this chapter offers a methodological reflection on the globalization of esoteric studies, challenging comparative approaches that fail to critically interrogate European categories, such as "esotericism."
