364.7 - ABOUT PAUL RICŒUR, SYMBOLS AND THE HEBREW BIBLE

AUTHORS:
Uchmann J.W. (German ~ Wien ~ Austria)
Text:
For Paul Ricœur's hermeneutics of biblical texts, a differentiated understanding of symbols is of central importance. Ricœur develops his concept of symbol in contrast to other, supposedly sim-ilar concepts such as sign, myth, metaphor or analogy. The symbol eludes a reduction to unam-biguity and opens up a multidimensional space for interpretation. The lecture will begin by dis-cussing the multidimensionality of Ricœur's concept of symbol and its significance for the her-meneutical approach to biblical texts. Subsequently, Ricœur's understanding of symbols will be examined in the context of the Hebrew Bible. It will be shown how and where symbols occur in the Hebrew Bible and what significance they have for man's religious existence. It will become clear that the self-revelation of YHWH in the scene of the burning bush in Exodus 3:14a is such a symbol. The aim of the lecture is to present Ricœur's theory as a valuable approach for the interpretation of biblical symbols and to open up the deeper meaning of these symbols in the context of the biblical texts.
