This paper focuses on the question how exercises can facilitate a narrative dialogue with a Biblical text in (Dutch) secondary school classrooms. In a narrative dialogue, the perspective of the 'other' is presented in a story, which results in an interaction between the text and readers' life questions and experiences. In the exercises, exegetical methods, in particular cognitive semantics and the communication-oriented method, are included. The aim is to develop exercises that facilitates a narrative dialogue by creating more openness to a Biblical text. This openness is crucial as affinity with a Biblical text is no longer a given among young people.
This paper presents developed and tested exercises to engage in a narrative dialogue with Genesis 1:1-2:3 regarding the question of life, 'Who is humankind?'. Furthermore, research questions for further research are discussed, followed by some suggestions to answer the first research question. This concerns whether a certain framework can be used as a starting point when designing the exercises, to ensure that all new teaching material created is structured similarly.
