Text:
This exegetical and theological paper explores connections between Paul's logic of "hoping against hope" in Romans 4 and the "groaning of creation" in Romans 8 as reflecting a core Christian narrative of cosmic hope in the face of apocalypse, death and destruction(s). I will firstly introduce the Pauline texts, applying insights from Catherine Keller's book "Facing Apocalypse." Then I will demonstrate how Paul's reasoning is grounded in Old Testament narratives involving creation, death, destruction, and hope. And finally, I will illustrate relevant implications and discursive challenges of this tradition for Pauline communities in the Roman imperial world of the 1st century, and point towards how this approach could inform current resistant and resilient strategies for framing, coping and engaging with current climate- and other crises.
