Text:
In 1864 Elia Benamozegh published the text 'Spinoza et la Kabbale'. In the lengthy article, the rabbi from Livorno, participating in the European debate on the sources of Spinozian pantheism, highlights the close link between Spinoza's philosophy and the jewish Kabbalah. Benamozegh shows how Spinoza elusively refers to the Kabbalistic tradition in his works, but makes a mistake that causes his system to degenerate into pantheism. The article 'Spinoza et la Kabbale' represents the pinnacle of the intellectual clash between Benamozegh and Spinoza: the aim is to present the topicality of the content that lies in the innovative historiographical proposal put forward by Benamozegh that considers Spinoza culturally linked to the Jewish tradition and in particular to the Kabbalistic tradition. The original interpretation of the italian rabbi, who sees in the geometric God the result of a confusion of the sefirotic spheres, provides useful keys for the understanding of the contemporary research on Spinoza and contributes to placing the Dutch philosopher within the canon of the history of Jewish philosophy.
